Sustainable web design agency for light, fast websites that rank

We design and develop sustainable WordPress websites, and we optimize existing ones. Less data on every visit means a faster website, better Google rankings, a smoother mobile experience, lower carbon emissions and less energy used. Measured, before and after.

Why go lighter

A heavy website costs you, and the planet

Every visit uses energy: in the data center, across the networks and on the visitor's device. And the average web page keeps growing. A heavy page loads slowly on mobile, hurts the user experience and slips down Google's results. Sustainable web design (also called eco-friendly or green web design) removes what serves no purpose, without taking away anything useful: the website gets leaner and faster, and its carbon footprint drops.

2,652KB the weight of a median web page on desktop
0.37g of CO₂ each time a median page loads, four times more for the heaviest
1.5% of the world’s electricity is used by data centers
14% only of mobile websites use a verified green host

Sustainable by design

Our best practices for an eco-friendly website

The same best practices reduce environmental impact, improve performance and help SEO. On WordPress, images, unused scripts and embedded videos are the three biggest levers.

Read our sustainable web design guide
  • A custom theme

Built with our own lightweight tool: no page builder loading code everywhere, each page only sends what it actually uses.

  • Optimized images

WebP or AVIF, the right size for every screen, loaded as you scroll. This is often the biggest win.

  • Scripts at the right time

JavaScript waits for the visitor’s first interaction, and only on the pages that need it.

  • Few plugins

Every plugin adds code, requests and a possible security hole. We keep only what matters.

  • Hosting, caching and CDN

Servers in France for Europe and in Asia for Japan, pages prepared in advance, and files sent from a server close to the visitor.

  • Video facades

An image with a play button: the YouTube player only loads if the visitor clicks.

  • Accessible and SEO-friendly

Headings, tags, structured data, contrast and keyboard navigation: a lean website offers a better user experience for everyone, and is easier to read for Google and for AI assistants.

  • A low-impact version

As an option: a second, very light version of the website that visitors switch on in one click, with a weight counter.

Ask a question

It’s a way of designing a website so it needs as few resources as possible (data, computing power, energy), without removing anything useful for the visitor: light pages, optimized images, few scripts and useful content. It reduces the website’s environmental impact while improving its performance. A sustainable web design agency makes these choices from the start (theme, features, images, hosting) and measures the result, instead of adding speed fixes at the end. Our sustainable web design guide covers the techniques and the figures.

No, not with us: every website we build is designed this way, at the listed price (one-page website $900, business website from $1,650, store from $3,200, excluding tax). Planned from the start, sustainable design is mostly a matter of choices. For an existing website, the price depends on its condition: the audit is free.

No. We remove what isn’t needed, not what matters: a polished design, beautiful well-optimized photos and a few light animations are still possible. To go further, the optional low-impact version offers a second, very light version, chosen by the visitor.

Yes, indirectly. A light website loads faster, which improves the Core Web Vitals Google takes into account, and the mobile experience. Clean, well-structured code is also easier to read for search engines and AI assistants.

According to the HTTP Archive Web Almanac 2024, a median web page emits about 0.37 g of CO₂ each time it loads on desktop. For a website with 10,000 page views a month, that adds up to about 44 kg of CO₂ a year, for the pages alone. Our own website measures 0.026 g per page view: the gap between websites is huge.

Test your pages with our free eco audit tool: in under a minute, a page’s weight, its footprint per visit and what to fix first, using a published method. You can compare with Website Carbon or EcoIndex, and check the weight of a full visit in your browser’s Network tab. For a detailed review, ask us for a free audit: we measure your main pages and explain the results. For a fuller checklist, the W3C Web Sustainability Guidelines (WSG) bring together practical recommendations, from user experience to hosting; we build on them for our websites.

There isn’t just one. Look at where the electricity comes from (renewable energy or not), how efficient the data centers are and whether heat is recovered: the Green Web Foundation keeps a directory of hosts whose commitment has been verified. For a small website, page weight often matters more: a page half as heavy means half the data on every visit, whatever the host.

Yes, that’s the most common case, as long as the website runs on WordPress. We work on a staging copy first, without touching the live website. If the website is too heavy to optimize at a reasonable cost, we tell you, and a redesign may be the better option. Not on WordPress (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify)? We’re happy to advise, and we can rebuild your website on WordPress, light from the start, if that’s a better fit.
